Recently, a new scientific research by Dr. Azhar Abbas Nasser, a lecturer at the College of Medicine - Warith Al-Anbia University, was published in the World Journal of Advance Healthcare Research, in which he discussed the presentation of red blood cell distribution width (RDW) as an inflammatory indicator of the severity of acute myocardial infarction (STEMI), using echocardiographic assessment.
The research focuses on the relationship between high RDW and changes in heart function in patients with acute myocardial infarction, as the results showed that RDW can be a biomarker that helps in evaluating patients and determining the extent of the impact of systolic and diastolic heart functions, which opens the way for its use in early diagnosis and prediction of potential complications.
This research is an important scientific addition in the field of cardiology, as it contributes to the development of methods for evaluating patients with myocardial infarction, and enhances the understanding of the relationship between inflammatory processes and heart complications. This study is an extension of the distinguished research efforts made by professors of the College of Medicine at Warith Al-Anbia University to support medical knowledge based on modern scientific evidence.

Definition:Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus (FMDV) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, and pigs. It is caused by a virus belonging to the Picornaviridae family, genus Aphthovirus. It is characterized by the appearance of vesicular lesions on the mouth, tongue, udder, and hooves, leading to loss of appetite, decreased milk production, and lameness.
InfectionFoot-and-mouth disease is an endemic disease in Iraq since the 1930s and is active once every four to five years in cases where one of the conditions for its reactivation is met, including low temperatures.. Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) is characterized by its sensitivity to high temperatures, as it cannot tolerate temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius, while it remains active at low temperatures. Therefore, cold weather and low temperatures do not cause the disease, but rather contribute to the virus remaining active for longer periods in the environment, which increases the possibility of its transmission and spread among animals.
Disease transmission:The virus is transmitted through direct contact with infected animals or inhalation, and can also be transmitted through clothing, shoes, feed, and contaminated water. It is characterized by its rapid spread in the herd, making it one of the most dangerous economically infectious animal diseases.
Is it transmitted to humans?Foot-and-mouth disease rarely affects humans, as it is considered a very rare zoonotic condition.
Is consuming infected meat dangerous?Consuming meat or milk from infected animals does not pose a risk to humans when well cooked or pasteurized, as the virus does not remain active at high temperatures. However, consuming uncooked products is prohibited to prevent microbiological spread.
Precautionary and control methods:1. Regular vaccination (Vaccination Programs): The most important means of prevention, and the (FMD Vaccine) is given to animals in periodic doses.2. Quarantine: Isolating infected animals immediately upon detection to prevent spread.
3. Disinfection: Using materials such as formaldehyde and sodium hypochlorite to disinfect farms and equipment.
4. Movement Restriction: Limiting the movement of animals between infected and healthy areas.
5. Culling: In some severe cases, infected animals are culled to prevent widespread outbreaks.
Conclusion:
Foot-and-mouth disease is an economically dangerous viral disease but does not pose a direct threat to human health when cooked animal products are consumed. Prevention depends on vaccination, isolation, and continuous disinfection, which help limit its spread and protect livestock.

On the occasion of the martyrdom of Imam Al-Kadhim (PBUH) on the twenty-fifth of Rajab in the year 183 AH, the professors and students of the College of Medicine volunteered to serve the visitors of the Imam and provide them with diagnostic and therapeutic field medical services. It is no secret that Imam Musa al-Kadhim ibn Jaafar ibn Muhammad ibn Ali al-Hashemi al-Qurashi (7 Safar 128 AH - 25 Rajab 183 AH) is one of the scholars of Muslims, and the seventh Imam of the Twelver Shiites. His father, Imam Jaafar ibn Muhammad al-Sadiq, is one of the jurists of Islam. He spent part of his life in prison, and witnessed a sensitive period in the history of Muslims. His nickname is Abu Ibrahim and Abu al-Hasan, and among his titles are al-Kadhim, the righteous servant, the door of needs, and the master of Baghdad. He was called al-Kadhim because of the intensity of his anger and patience in the face of the injustice of the oppressors. We ask God Almighty to accept these voluntary works from them and to bestow acceptance and satisfaction upon the distinguished College of Medicine, and reward and recompense upon its professors and students, and continued progress and advancement in comprehensive health services.
