Affordable and Inclusive Campus Dining at the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa
The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa recognises that student welfare and academic success are closely interconnected. In line withits commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive educational environment, the University provides a subsidised on-campus dining service designed to ensure that all students and staff have access to affordable, nutritious, and freshly prepared meals. Through substantial financial support, meals are offered at approximately 45–50% below prevailing market prices, thereby reducing financial pressures on students and helping to ensure that the cost of food does not become a barrier to educational participation or wellbeing.
Diverse and Affordable Meal Provision
The University cafeteria offers a wide-ranging menu that accommodates diverse dietary requirements and cultural preferences, including vegetarian, non-vegetarian, and vegan options. A signature subsidised rice and curry meal is available for 1,500 IQD and is served with complimentary bread. Meal options rotate regularly and include dishes such as eggplant curry in tomato broth, bean and tomato soup with rice, okra with tomatoes, legumes and pulses with meat, and spinach curry.
In addition to the daily meal service, the cafeteria provides a comprehensive à la carte selection at highly affordable prices. These include chicken sandwiches (2,000 IQD), beef sandwiches (2,500 IQD), rizo dishes (4,000 IQD), beef and chicken wraps (2,500 IQD), quarter grilled chicken (3,000 IQD), meat pies (1,000 IQD), french fries (750 IQD), quarter chicken with rice platters (4,000 IQD), beef burgers (1,500 IQD), appetisers (1,000 IQD), chicken, meat, or salad platters (2,500 IQD), and falafel wraps (1,000 IQD). By maintaining low prices across a broad menu, the University seeks to support students from all socioeconomic backgrounds and alleviate the financial challenges commonly associated with higher education.
Commitment to Food Safety and Quality
The University places significant emphasis on food safety, hygiene, and nutritional quality. The cafeteria operates in accordance with strict food safety procedures and undergoes regular inspections by the Iraqi Ministry of Health. All meals are prepared using fresh ingredients and in compliance with recognised hygiene standards, ensuring that students and staff can access safe, high-quality food within the campus environment.
Contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
The subsidised dining initiative reflects the University’s broader social responsibility agenda and contributes directly to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The programme is made possible through the continued support of the Holy Shrine of Imam Hussain, whose commitment to social welfare enables the University to maintain affordable meal provision for its academic community.
Most directly, the initiative advances SDG 2: Zero Hunger by ensuring reliable access to affordable and nutritious food for students and staff. It also contributes to SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being through the promotion of balanced and hygienic meals that support physical health and wellbeing. By reducing the economic burden associated with daily living costs, the programme further supports SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities, helping to minimise financial disparities that may otherwise hinder students’ educational experiences and opportunities.
In addition, the initiative aligns with SDG 4: Quality Education, as access to affordable nutrition is closely linked to student concentration, academic performance, retention, and overall educational attainment. The University’s emphasis on inclusive welfare provision also reflects the principles of SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, particularly through the creation of a supportive and socially responsible campus environment that prioritises community wellbeing.
Through this initiative, the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa demonstrates its ongoing commitment to student support, social inclusion, and sustainable development by ensuring that affordable and nutritious meals remain accessible to all members of the University community.
