Sustainable transport Initiatives

The University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa is committed to developing a sustainable, accessible, and low-carbon transportation system that minimises dependence on private vehicles while improving mobility for students, staff, and visitors. Through an integrated approach that combines shared transportation, parking demand management, active mobility, and zero-emission transportation, the University continues to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and create a safer and more pedestrian-friendly campus.

Complimentary Shuttle Bus Services

In partnership with the Directorate of Imam Hussain Holy Shrine, the University operates 12 complimentary shuttle buses that complete approximately 32 trips per day, providing free transportation for around 1,200 students across Karbala city. The shuttle service connects student accommodation and key locations throughout the city with the University campus, providing a reliable alternative to private vehicles while reducing traffic congestion and transport-related emissions.

Parking Demand Management

The University actively manages parking demand rather than expanding parking capacity as the campus population grows. Over the past three years, parking availability has been carefully controlled, contributing to approximately a 15% reduction in the number of vehicles entering the campus, decreasing from 137 to 117 vehicles, while maintaining a low vehicle-to-population ratio of 0.0114.

To achieve this, the University has implemented several complementary initiatives:

  • Controlled Parking Access: Student parking is managed through a permit-based system to discourage unnecessary private vehicle use and encourage sustainable travel.
  • Demand-Based Parking Fees: Parking fees for students encourage greater use of the University's free shuttle buses, bicycles, and shared transportation options.
  • Priority Parking Allocation: Parking spaces closest to university buildings are reserved for staff, official university vehicles, visitors, and persons with disabilities, ensuring efficient use of available parking.
  • Priority Parking for Low-Emission Vehicles: Dedicated parking spaces are provided for electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, and registered carpool vehicles to encourage cleaner transportation choices.
  • Visitor Parking Management: Designated visitor parking areas and controlled access minimise unnecessary vehicle circulation while preserving pedestrian spaces and maintaining efficient parking management.
  • Dedicated Carpool Parking: Reserved parking spaces encourage ride-sharing among students and staff, helping to reduce the number of single-occupancy vehicles travelling to campus.
  • Conversion of Parking into Green Spaces: Selected areas previously used for parking have been transformed into landscaped green areas and pedestrian-friendly open spaces, improving biodiversity, campus aesthetics, and sustainable land use.
Zero-Emission and Active Transportation

The University continues to expand sustainable transportation by investing in zero-emission and active mobility infrastructure.

Current initiatives include:

  • A Zero-Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Programme providing electric vehicles for official university activities and transportation between affiliated facilities.
  • Free-to-rent electric vehicles available for students and staff travelling to the nearby sister university for joint academic programmes.
  • A shared bicycle programme, including conventional bicycles and electric bicycles, encouraging healthy, convenient, and emission-free travel across campus.
  • Electric vehicle charging stations installed in strategic locations to support the University's growing fleet of electric vehicles and encourage wider adoption of zero-emission transportation.
  • Secure bicycle parking and bicycle repair and maintenance stations, enabling cyclists to safely store and maintain their bicycles while promoting cycling as a practical daily mode of transport.
Pedestrian-Friendly Campus

The University has been designed as a compact, walkable campus where academic buildings, student services, accommodation, laboratories, and recreational facilities are located within comfortable walking distance. This pedestrian-oriented campus design reduces the need for internal motorised transportation while encouraging walking as the primary mode of travel.

To further improve safety and accessibility, car-free zones have been established around key academic buildings and high-pedestrian areas, creating safer, quieter, and healthier spaces for students, staff, and visitors.

In addition, the University enforces a no-motorcycle policy, preventing motorcycles from circulating or parking on campus. This policy reduces traffic congestion, noise pollution, and vehicle emissions while encouraging greater use of shared transportation, bicycles, and other environmentally friendly mobility options.

Sustainable Mobility Awareness and Digital Services

Recognising that behavioural change is essential for long-term sustainability, the University regularly organises sustainable mobility awareness campaigns promoting walking, cycling, ride-sharing, and zero-emission transportation. These initiatives encourage students and staff to adopt environmentally responsible travel habits and reduce dependence on private vehicles.

The University also utilises digital mobility management through online platforms and scheduling systems that coordinate shuttle services, communicate transport information, and facilitate ride-sharing among members of the University community.

Supporting Sustainable Mobility Beyond Campus

To further reduce dependence on private vehicle ownership, the University encourages the use of external ride-sharing platforms, car-rental applications, and shared transport networks available throughout Karbala. These services complement the University's own transportation initiatives by providing flexible and lower-emission travel options for students and staff when travelling beyond the campus.

Building a Low-Carbon Campus

Together, these initiatives form an integrated sustainable transportation strategy that reduces private vehicle use, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, improves air quality, enhances pedestrian safety, and promotes healthier travel choices. Through continuous investment in sustainable mobility infrastructure and environmentally responsible transportation policies, the University of Warith Al-Anbiyaa continues to support SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) while reinforcing its commitment to becoming a greener and more sustainable university.
